Veterans Benefits Administration VBA

ESAdministración de Beneficios para Veteranos
The VA administration that pays disability compensation and pensions and runs the GI Bill, VA home loans, and other benefits

Federal benefits for disabled veterans date to the Revolution, but after World War I they were scattered among several agencies. The Veterans Bureau was created in 1921 and merged into the Veterans Administration on July 21, 1930, which became a cabinet department in 1989. The Veterans Benefits Administration is one of its three administrations, alongside the health and cemetery systems, and is led by the Under Secretary for Benefits.

VBA pays monthly disability compensation to millions of veterans for conditions connected to their service, rated by severity, along with needs-based pensions and survivors' benefits. It administers education benefits under the GI Bill, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill of 2008, guarantees home loans that require no down payment, a program that began with the 1944 GI Bill, runs vocational rehabilitation, and manages veterans' life insurance. Its regional offices process claims, often with help from accredited veterans service organizations.

The PACT Act, signed on August 10, 2022, created presumptions that certain illnesses were caused by burn pits and other toxic exposures, bringing a surge of new claims that VBA processed in record numbers. Debates continue over the claims backlog, the accuracy of disability ratings, and the growing cost of compensation, which has risen as more veterans apply and ratings increase. Supporters of the system say it honors a solemn obligation, while some budget analysts argue that the rating schedule needs modernizing.
