Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara created the Defense Intelligence Agency on October 1, 1961, after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and years of conflicting estimates from the separate service intelligence branches. The goal was a single agency to produce military intelligence for the Secretary, the Joint Chiefs, and the combatant commands. Its director is a three-star general or admiral and also serves as the senior intelligence adviser to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
DIA is an all-source agency, meaning it combines intelligence gathered by every method: human sources, satellite imagery, intercepted communications, and technical measurement of weapons tests. It assesses foreign military capabilities, weapons programs, and intentions, from Chinese and Russian forces to missile and nuclear programs. It runs the Defense Attache System of military officers at U.S. embassies, the Defense Clandestine Service for human intelligence, and specialized centers such as the National Center for Medical Intelligence. It has well over ten thousand employees and is headquartered at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington.
DIA is one of the eighteen elements of the intelligence community overseen by the Director of National Intelligence and the congressional intelligence committees. Its assessments sometimes conflict with those of the CIA or with political leaders' views, and in August 2025 its director was removed after a preliminary agency assessment of U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites drew public criticism from administration officials, an episode critics cited as politicization of intelligence and supporters cited as accountability.
